87 Union

Drawing inspiration from the history and architecture of New Haven, CT, 87 Union Street offers housing options for faculty and grad students from Yale University, as well as for local hospital staff and employees from the multitude of businesses in the area.

The city itself boasted the first public tree planting program in America, which produced an array of mature trees, including large Elms. This program gave the city its nickname: “The Elm City.” The history and magnitude of these antique trees are reflected in the wood flooring used throughout the building.

The brass strips used in the lobby and ground floor area also reflect New Haven’s history, namely that of the famous 18th-century inventor Eli Whitney. His clock-making and brass hardware creations contributed to making early Connecticut a powerful manufacturing economy.
