The Ursuline School

The Ursuline School, an all-girls, private middle and high school located in New Rochelle, New York in Westchester County built an addition to the school, including a new main entrance and offices. This new space would require a number of products and design elements to complete the interior. After involved coordination and scheduling with the GC, a plan was put in place.

This project involved many areas and many products that needed to play off each other in order to create a consistent yet vibrant feel throughout the new addition to the school. AtlasMasland Sayulita area rugs were placed in the lobby area, Crossville Laminam porcelain tile was used for the columns, and Milliken Journal Inscription Scroll carpet tile for the offices. Walk-off tile was installed in the entryway using Tarkett Assertive Action. For the classroom, Ardex white topping cement was used for the classroom, AO Urban Canvas tile on the restroom floors, and a beautiful Royal Navy, Crossville Retro Active tile for the restroom walls.

The result is a brand-new, modern, upgraded space to help carry this historic and prestigious institution of learning into the future.

New Heights Academy Charter School

New Heights Academy Charter School

New Heights Academy Charter School

The New Heights Academy Charter School in Harlem, New York City was in desperate need of new flooring for both the school’s cafeteria and throughout the hallways, as well as a refurbishment of the restrooms. Because the cafeteria subfloor was rotted beyond repair, the project involved ripping up the entire floor and substrate before a new one could be installed.

The overall design strategy was to use products that represent functionality, performance, and cost. The flooring products eventually chosen fell in line with this concept. RD Weis worked with the school’s Director of Operations, Sylvie Estrella and all design was done in-house with 100% influence on what products to use in each location. A true team effort.

Prior to choosing specific products, we worked with Armstrong to create a digital visualization to see which products and colors the school liked the best. During the decision-making, work on the restroom floors began. NeverStrip Micron coating was applied, the grout colors were changed, and the floors sealed with a satin finish.

The main challenge of the project was the cafeteria substrate, which had to be rebuilt. RD Weis was brought in because of our knowledge of both substrates and underlayment. The old, decaying cafeteria floor was removed and Teknoflor Prime HPD 12” X 24” LVT was installed. A beautiful Buttercream was chosen as the color. The school’s logo was then cut in using a waterjet to create the custom inlaid logo. A multitude of colors were used to match the school logo.

The project’s next phase involved the hallways of the school. Armstrong 18” X 18” parallel LVT tiles were used throughout, four floors in all. Johnsonite wall base was used in the cafeteria and hallways and Mats Inc. runners and walk off systems installed. All debris was removed from the building and the new cafeteria and corridors were up and running.

Shell & Bones Oyster Bar and Grill

Shell & Bones Oyster Bar and Grill Project by RD Weis

Shell & Bones Oyster Bar and Grill Project by RD Weis

The Shell & Bones Oyster Bar and Grill in New Haven, CT was in need of a flooring renovation to be completed in time for their grand re-opening. The beautiful waterfront dining establishment aimed for a sleek new look to replace the existing LVT that had shrunk, with significant gaps between the planks, faded at the window walls and telegraphed through the improper floor prep from the initial install of the product.

With an extremely short time frame in which to complete the project, RD Weis needed a product that was extremely water-resistant due to the use of excessive mop water for maintenance. Adding to this challenge were two different, uninsulated subfloors (wood and concrete) poor floor prep, a roof leak from the space above, sunlight from the picture frame glass doors that had faded the previous flooring and extreme storm surges that brought salt water into the space.

The design strategy was to use a product that was not only aesthetically pleasing, but one that met most of the challenges involved and the client’s requirements, and one that was readily available. A challenging task to find flooring that was impervious to fading, water, freezing temperatures, poor maintenance, was acoustically sound absorbing, and was not a glue down product.

With complete influence in the specification of the project, RD Weis recommended AtlasMasland Calibre Quiet Down high performance LVT, a 4-sided click tile with attached sound reduction underlayment. The product features ceramic bead and an Inhibi-Max UV coating.

Once the color selection was agreed upon, RD Weis and crew had 10 days to receive the material, prep the floor, and complete the project for the grand re-opening.
