A Healthy Environment Starts with a Clean Carpet

The care and maintenance of your carpet on a regular basis is the key to a safe and healthy environment, free from air-borne pathogens, odors, and bacteria.

Without regular care, fabric can become a source of indoor air problems. Fibers hold odors, soil, bacteria, and dust mite allergens. The RD Weis Carpet Care Program is a low-disruptive and quiet process that can be applied anywhere, anytime and reduces contaminants, improving your indoor air quality, and with no disruption to day-to-day business.

Unlike traditional carpet cleaning methods, spots and stains are much less likely to reappear with our revolutionary encapsulation cleaning system.

Our specialized cleaning machines and chemicals do not allow moisture to penetrate the carpet backing. This prevents any deep stains in the backing or underlying pad from wicking upward into the carpet fibers.

Carpet cleaning

Have you ever endured the frustration of having spots and stains reappear a short time after a carpet cleaning? If so, you are not alone. The reappearance of spots and stains is actually a very common occurrence when a carpet is “cleaned” using a traditional shampoo and rinse method.

Sometimes, spots can reappear as soon as the carpet dries. Other times, the spots come back after several weeks have passed.

There are two primary causes of carpet re-spotting: Wicking and Residue. One originates below the carpet fibers, in the backing or pad of the carpet. The other originates in the carpet fibers themselves.

Wicking

Stains that resurface as a result of wicking originate below the carpet fibers. In these cases, the original stain has not only soiled the carpet fibers, it has also penetrated into the carpet backing and underlying pad.

If spots and stains reappear as soon as the carpet dries, wicking is most likely to blame.

Residue

Stains that reappear as a result of residue originate within the carpet fibers themselves. In these cases, some of the shampoo, soap or other cleaning agent used in a traditional cleaning process was left behind in your carpet. Even after the carpet dries, the residue will remain.

Even vacuuming the carpet will not release the soil stuck to the residue within the fibers. The same spots appear to come right back, but in reality it is mostly new soil that becomes stuck to the detergent residue within the carpet fibers.

If you don’t maintain your carpet, you can’t expect it to stay clean

A well-designed and implemented maintenance program performed by qualified personnel, properly equipped and trained, is essential for optimal long-term performance.

Maintenance Plan and Schedule – the five elements

A customized comprehensive carpet care program consists of five elements:

  1. Soil Containment
    – isolation of soil entering the building using mats at all entrances.
  2. Vacuuming
    – scheduled frequency for removal of dry soil using a CRI approved “Seal of Approval/Green Label (SOA/GL)” vacuum.
  3. Spot and Spill Removal System
    – using professional spot removal techniques.
  4. Interim Cleaning
    – scheduled frequency appearance cleaning for all traffic areas.
  5. Restorative Cleaning
    – scheduled frequent deep cleaning to remove residues and trapped soils.

Protect and enhance the quality of your facility’s environment – and the health and safety of your employees with the RD Weis Carpet Care Program.

Zabar’s – New York City

RD Weis and Diverzify Complete Full Flooring Installation at Zabar’s

New York, NY & Itasca, IL – September 2, 2020 … RD Weis LLC and Diverzify recently completed a new flooring installation at Zabar’s, the iconic specialty food shop in NYC. The project entailed replacing the weathered, 30-year-old floors with Gerflor GTI Max. In addition to the installation, the RD Weis team disinfected the family-run business every week for five months to ensure the facility was clean and safe for employees and customers.

“RD Weis did a phenomenal job transforming Zabar’s old-world floors into a beautiful, functional and safe installation,” said David Tait, Zabar’s Senior Operations and Project Manager. “The RD Weis team lived up to their marketing as “solution providers” in every way and they were great to work with. They made me look like a hero – while they did all the heavy lifting.”

In conjunction with Zabar’s management team and their associates, the install was done in four phases, from late July to late August 2020. The RD Weis team worked at night when the store was closed to replace the outdated floors using GTI Max, an interlocking, modular tile flooring. Working along Zabar’s staff, store racks and merchandise were moved from the aisles and then replaced after each shift to allow the store to reopen the next morning. The process allowed the team to leap frog areas to achieve maximum productivity and to minimize disruption to normal work hours.

“Zabar’s staff was great at mapping out how they wanted the install to go and incredibly helpful in moving everything,” said Randy Weis, President of RD Weis LLC. “One of the great features of GTI Max is that the area being worked on can return to normal service once the floor is installed, with no downtime to daily operations.”

The project began with meetings at the RD Weis showroom in Manhattan to review and discuss potential flooring solutions. GTI became the the final choice due to the product’s ease of installation, allowing the store to remain open during regular work hours, avoiding a weeks-long shutdown. At each phase of the project, communication remained open and constructive to determine what worked, what didn’t work, and what challenges to overcome.

David Tait, Zabar’s Senior Operations and Project Manager summed up the project in the following letter:

Reopening Requires Rethinking – Return to Work Safely

Although a return-to-work date is still unknown, when employees do return, they deserve peace of mind knowing they are entering a clean, safe and healthy environment.

RD Weis is committed to assisting facilities in rethinking the physical workspace and creating an ongoing, proactive plan to maintain a clean, safe, healthy environment, free of COVID-19.

There are many issues that need to be addressed prior to reopening during this uncertain time. Any decisions should be based on accurate and reliable information. As things change on a daily basis, you should continuously check for updates from reputable sources.

Disinfection

A wall-to-wall disinfection, carpet care, panel and upholstery sanitization, and bathroom tile and grout restoration should be completed prior to reopening and on a regular basis to ensure maximum protection for your staff.

While there are hundreds of products out there claiming to be effective against the coronavirus, the products used should be hospital grade disinfectants listed on the EPA “N” list, that meet the CDC/EPA efficacy requirement against COVID-19, that is, they kill 99.999% of bacteria and viruses on contact and are safe in all environments and on all surfaces.

Electrostatic spraying/fogging for disinfection is a simple, yet effective solution. This method uses a compressor to deliver an accurate amount of chemistry to non-porous surfaces for the proper dwell time. Targeted disinfection should cover every inch of your space including:

  • Desks
  • Partitions
  • Phones
  • Computers
  • Cafeteria + Kitchen Areas
  • Elevator Controls
  • Lobby entrances

Carpet Care

An EPA Safer Choice product is applied to the carpet. Once it dries, the carpet is vacuumed, removing dirt, germs, dust mites, stains, allergens, and odor sources leaving the fibers clean, dry, and odor-free.

Paneling and Upholstery Sanitization

Sanitization of your curtains, blinds and upholstery to ensure your facility and employees stay clean, healthy and free from airborne pathogens using a specialized very low moisture extraction.

Tile and Grout Restoration

In addition to targeted disinfection on those surfaces that an infected person would touch in bathrooms, especially faucets, toilet seats, toilet partitions, towel and toilet paper dispensers, your tile and grout should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.

The RD Weis holistic approach to disinfection helps you return to a healthy space.

Coronavirus

DISINFECTING COVID-19

In today’s uncertain and ever-changing climate, the future of a facility and the people in it lies in a sustained effort to maintain a clean, safe and healthy environment.

For the past few months, offices throughout the country have shut down, with many retaining a skeleton crew and most employees working remotely. While the return-to-work date continues to be pushed back, employees need peace of mind that — when they do return to work — they are entering a safe and healthy workspace.

So how does a company ensure its space is safe, healthy and free of the threat of the coronavirus and how does a facility ensure its employees, customers, clients and anyone who walks through its building is safe?

As COVID-19 continues its spread throughout the U.S., it’s crucial that companies create a proactive and preemptive disinfection program as an integral part of a facility’s ongoing maintenance program. As the new normal becomes more and more apparent, disinfection will become part of everyone’s regiment – no longer cleaning just for appearance but cleaning especially for health.

There are several factors to consider when choosing a comprehensive disinfectant system, and the products and processes involved. The products used should be EPA-registered, hospital-grade disinfectants, which meet the CDC/EPA efficacy requirement against the COVID-19 that is, they kill 99.999% of bacteria and viruses on contact.

Cleaning is required before disinfecting in order to remove dirt, debris and dust because inorganic and organic materials that remain on surfaces may interfere with the effectiveness of disinfection. Simply wiping down your space is not enough to rid your environment of COVID-19. A professional atomizer fog application is the best option to ensure broad treatment and coverage to kill 99.999% of bacteria.

Electrostatic spraying/fogging for disinfection is a simple, yet effective, solution. This method uses a compressor to drive air through a charger in the sprayer/fogging nozzle. These devices deliver an accurate amount of chemistry to surfaces, allowing them to be wetted without dripping them on the floor.

Armed with PPE equipment, including goggles, rubber gloves, surgical booties, N-95 masks and Tyvek suits, technicians pre-clean surfaces to remove any bacterial biofilm, soi or debris from surfaces. It is only then that disinfectant is applied and is allowed to remain wet for 10 minutes to kill COVID-19. It’s important to note that spraying/fogging gets better coverage than wiping and puts out more product in a larger area. If a surface is still wet, it is wiped down.

Experienced firms understand how to dial in their electrostatic sprayers and fogger machines based on the ambient temperature and relative humidity of a space in order to deliver the right amount of chemistry without unnecessary over saturation. For targeted disinfection, you must think in terms of surfaces that an infected person would touch: door knobs, computers, printers, phones, elevator pads, and bathrooms – especially faucets, toilet partitions, towel dispensers, etc.

The amount of time it takes for disinfection depends on the size of the space, but the average rate for a technician with one fogging machine is 4,000 square feet per hour. Upon completion, work can resume almost immediately.

The disinfectant products are safe in a variety of environments, including schools, healthcare facilities, corporate offices, airports and transportation centers, restaurants, retail establishments, gyms, museums, conference centers and construction sites. As time goes on more and more environments have become targets for disinfection: EMS vehicles, ride shares, buses, subways – the list goes on.

Facilities should not take shortcuts when it comes to proper disinfection. A hired firm needs to be experienced, professional and qualified, one that has the right chemistry, equipment and protective gear to handle the ongoing threat of COVID-19. This is the new normal.
